In today’s globalised society, 36.3 million Africans now permanently reside outside of Africa, with 10 million individuals living in European countries.
The African Diaspora has reached most corners of the world, but despite how far Africans have travelled, their histories and stories have not been assimilated into the narratives of European societies and are not included in European teachings. This is problematic because the stories we are told shape the way we see the world and no single story can capture the richness of a continent as varied and vast as Africa.
AIM
SingleStory aims to bring the gift of griots, West African historians or storytellers, into the 2020s to promote African stories through the medium of digital storytelling.
OBJECTIVES
•Support local griots to develop digital stories
•Provide local schools, adult education centres, and communities in our countries with a unique perspective that can only be fostered by learning the stories of Africa
A “griot” is a West African historian or storyteller, a living archive that embodies the cultural traditions, lessons, and tales of communities and tribes of the past. The SingleStory project aims to bring the gift of the griot into the 2020s, promoting African stories through the medium of digital storytelling.
By finding our own local griots, and supporting them to develop digital stories, SingleStory will provide local schools, adult education centres, and communities in our respective countries with a unique perspective that can only be fostered by learning the stories of Africa.
Digital Storytelling Curriculum
A course aiming to develop the storytelling and digital skills of African storytellers in the partners’ networks, ensuring that they have the skills necessary to document and recording their stories, sharing them with the world through a variety of multimedia tools and platforms like short films, podcasts, and animations.
Induction Training Programme for Adult and Community Educators
A bespoke induction training programme to ensure that adult educators are fully trained to deliver the SingleStory Digital Storytelling Curriculum and to harness the full potential of the online learning environments developed by project partners.
SingleStory Digital Repository and MOOC
The SingleStory Digital Repository will share all 140 digital stories produced by the African storytellers who complete the Digital Storytelling Curriculum. The MOOC will provide access to the Digital Storytelling Curriculum and the Induction Training Programme.
